Since purple martins are members of the barn-dwelling family of swallows, what could be more appropriate lodging than a little red barn birdhouse? Only one sheet of 1/4-inch plywood is required to build the 12-room house. The base is 26 inches by 29 inches and the height is 20 inches. Railings keep fledglings from falling and the roof detaches for cleaning. Mounting height should be from 10 to 20 feet and the house should be situated in the center of an open space 30 to 100 feet from human housing.
