  • When we boast about offering more than 10,000 home plans on homeplans.com, our intention is to entice you to look, not paralyze you in choosing. That's why we love hearing that people like Angela and Brent Wilkins sifted through thousands of home plans—all but three of which Brent vetoed. Then they "narrowed" their search according to the home's width and still settled on Plan APS-1911. The result of such perseverance? An absolutely gorgeous home with the comfort, style and practicality they'll enjoy for years to come.

What drew the Wilkinses to this home was the design of the kitchen as separate from the living areas, not to mention the split bedroom arrangement that allows them greater privacy in the master suite as their son, Nick, gets older. Plus, after living in a smaller house for eight years, they felt it was time for a home with more space and ample storage, allowing them to stay put as their family grows.

But finding the right home didn't mean finding a perfect home, so the Wilkinses worked with their builder to plan changes that would better suit their lifestyle. They opted for cost-saving flat ceilings rather than vaulted ceilings in the family room, dining room and master suite—where they also eliminated a window to accommodate their bed—and instead invested in a larger master bath with a more expansive closet. They altered the layout in the kitchen to fit their preferred appliances and removed the serving bar from the family room for a cleaner look. In addition, they opted to extend their utility room into the third garage stall, creating more storage and an extra-large, two-car garage.

Although the Wilkinses have found ways of relaxing in their lovely new home (Angela particularly likes watching DVDs on the screened porch when their Frankfort, Ky., weather allows for it), the work is not done. In the future, they plan to add a built-in entertainment system along the east wall in the family room. They would also like to complete the landscaping around their home. Otherwise, as Angela notes about their exciting find, she "wouldn't change a thing."
