There are many reasons for deciding to build a new home. Perhaps your family has grown over the years and you need more space. Or maybe the "starter" home you bought five years ago is ready for its next "starter" family. It is also possible that you just get excited about the prospect of new surroundings, and you are one of those people who live by the motto: "Change is good." Phil Tripp, a small-business owner, and his family, of Jackson, Mich., let this belief carry them through the adventure of building a new home, Plan KLF-9710.
The "character of the outside," according to Phil, attracted the Tripps to Plan KLF-9710. Eye-catching rooflines and lots of windows give it great curb appeal. The handsome brick facade was a personal touch the Tripps added to the home, since the original plan called for a combination of stucco and stone. They also added an enormous swimming pool in the backyard, setting the stage for the "great entertaining home and friendly atmosphere" Phil said they strove for.
The atmosphere inside the home could be described simply as luxurious. The welcoming front porch leads to the foyer and the formal dining room, which includes a stepped ceiling and a charming arched window. The original plan called for a study on the opposite side of the foyer, but the Tripps transformed it into a guest room instead. They kept the graceful bay window to add an elegant touch for their guests.
The Tripps decided to tweak the kitchen a bit as well, replacing the island cooktop with a long snack bar and relocating the cooktop. The kitchen remains open to the sun-drenched family room, which was expanded into the breakfast nook. Part of the back porch was enclosed to create a new breakfast nook. French doors lead to the sunny and inviting living room, where a handsome fireplace is flanked by built-in shelving.
The luxurious master suite showcases numerous amenities. The Tripps added a private three-season porch with a hot tub, which is accessed from the bedroom through a French door. The master bath easily accomodates two people, boasting both a garden tub and a large shower, plus two sinks and a huge walk-in closet.
The secondary bedrooms offer an inviting feel. The front bedroom boasts ample closet space and bright windows. The rear bedroom offers a vaulted ceiling, a walk-in closet and private access to the full hall bath.
The Tripp family enjoys the idea of change and "the excitement of 'new,'" says Phil, which is what ultimately prompted them to build. They weren't afraid to make modifications to the original plan to fit their needs and their tastes to personalize the home.
Phil says that he would recommend stock plans to others for their "layouts, ideas and uniqueness." The Tripps started by finding a home they loved on the outside and then added their own unique elements—like the brick facade, the swimming pool and the changes to the kitchen, which is now Phil's favorite room.
When asked what the Tripps have in store for their home in the future, Phil says that they plan to "sell it to build again." Talk about a family that isn't afraid to try new things! But with a home this breathtaking, the Tripps may find it very difficult to pack up and leave.
