  • Like many of our customers, David Thomson's story starts with a heartfelt wish. "We've dreamed of living in the mountains for a long time, and finally bought some acreage," he says of the 35-acre "slice of a mountain" they chose. "We considered purchasing a manufactured home, but realized if we self-contracted, we could build a high-quality home in the same price range."

That decision led David and Audrey, his wife, to homeplans.com, where they searched for a home plan that would complement their challenging lot. They discovered Plan NW-579. "This plan is perfect for building on a steep slope and maximizing the views," says David. "We needed four bedrooms, but we didn't have a lot of depth to work with because of the mountain grade. A long, two-story with a wraparound deck was exactly what we were looking for."

Eleven months after breaking ground, that is exactly what the Thomsons had.

David, an information developer for a software firm, and Audrey, a homemaker who monitors the activities of their three children (middle school-, high school-, and junior college-aged—what a handful!), name the large prow windows as their favorite feature of the home. "But we love the deck, kitchen window, and having a woodstove on the first floor and propane on the second," they add. "We hope to enjoy this home for a long time."

We always ask our customers if they'd use stock plans again in the future. To this question, David responds, "Definitely—first place I'd go. We have already forwarded your Web site to several prospective home builders."

The material list for this home was a wise investment for the Thomsons. "We ordered lumber directly from the list," says David. "Our electrician, framer, engineer—all worked with the plans."

Every home-building project has its challenges, and this one was no exception, says David. "Instead of heeding [the blueprints'] advice to measure windows after the frame was built, I ordered the specified windows and told the framer to make sure the dimensions were correct. Needless to say, I should have waited and remeasured!"

All in all, though, another success story is clinging to the mountainside in Colorado. "It's our home," says David. "We hope to enjoy it for a long time."
