  • About ten years ago, Grover and Nona Lunsford were looking through home plans when they came across Plan CC-3505-M in a magazine. "We liked the layout and the way it looked on the outside," says Grover, an insurance agent, noting the home's French-style facade and handsome gables. Since the Lunsfords were evaluating potential homes first by the floor plan and then by the exterior, this one immediately caught their eye, because it satisfied both criteria.

There was only one problem: The rooms were a bit smaller than the Lunsfords wanted. So they continued their search, only to find themselves repeatedly coming back to Plan CC-3505-M. Finding nothing that they liked as well as this plan, Grover finally asked a builder what would happen if they made the master suite six feet longer. "The builder told us it would only lengthen the roof," explains Grover. "After we realized we could do this, it was never a question [as to which plan we'd choose]." Soon after, construction began on their 14-acre lot in northwestern Georgia.

The Lunsfords had originally opted to build, rather than buy, because as Grover puts it, "We wanted what we wanted." Approaching their new home with that frame of mind, once the Lunsfords chose Plan CC-3505-M, they decided to make a few more modifications to the plan, including adding approximately 1,300 square feet to the home by enlarging the master suite and the fourth bedroom, and by adding two bonus rooms. They also decided to implement interior-design styles they'd noticed elsewhere.

Perhaps their most unique modification was based on something they had seen at a resort in Florida. Instead of crowning the Great Room with spider beams as the design called for, they raised the ceiling to twelve feet and, in the center, added an octagonal structure that steps down for a dramatic effect, staging a chandelier that hangs from the structure.

Another modification was modeled after something they had seen in a different home. Instead of using straight 90-degree angles to join the walls, the Lunsfords used bullnose corners throughout the home, in which two walls form a convex shape when they meet, creating a softer look.

In addition to incorporating different interior-design styles to get the home to look how they wanted, the Lunsfords also thought about how their new home could best fit their lifestyle. As a result, the kitchen area was modified to include additional amenities. They took out the stairway between the kitchen and the Great Room and installed double ovens and a large pantry in its place. (The pantry that was originally in the plan was turned into a butler's pantry.) Instead of putting a fireplace in the nearby hearth room, the Lunsfords put in an entertainment center, so they could use the room as a media room.

Despite the enhanced kitchen, Nona admits that her favorite room is the music room, which was originally designed as a study. "I love the large windows, because [the room] gets lots of light," she says. She also adds that she loves the master suite because of its large closets and private bath.

Determined to get their ideal home both inside and out, the Lunsfords also added a large deck to the rear of the home. Because the home boasts a rear view that is just as attractive as the front view, the deck provides a casual spot for visitors to take advantage of the scenery, as well as providing an ornamental touch.

Ten years after first seeing the plan, the Lunsfords have finally built their dream home—infused with the amenities they want and the design features they love!
