Owner-specific modifications:
Shifted back of house in 15 feet
Raised main-floor ceilings to 10 feet
Added garage and bonus room
If you're looking for a neighborhood with a small-town feel and
a destination lake just steps from your front door, Minnetonka
Beach, Minnesota, is the place to go. Wayne and Tianna Emerson
know this; that's why they chose to build their home in this charming locale near the
shores of Lake Minnetonka.
The Emersons tore down an existing home and used its foundation
as a starting point. They chose Plan DD-2577-B (also available
at our daughter Web site, TNDhomes.com) for its appealing facade, which would blend nicely with those of its existing,
traditional-styled neighbors-to-be. The home worked with
the existing foundation and footprint and met all city
requirements for height and width. Its open and airy
interior—not to mention its roomy front porch—helped to
maximize lake views.
Wayne had always wanted to serve as general contractor and
builder for his own home. "You get to choose every single
thing that goes into the house," he says.
With his newly gained 20/20 hindsight, though, he cautions new
home builders against unrealistic expectations: "Double the
time you think it will take to build your home. And have a lot
of patience!"
A few modifications help, too. The Emersons customized their
2,950-square-foot pre-drawn plan by shifting the back of the
house in 15 feet, raising the main-floor ceilings to 10 feet,
and adding a garage and a bonus room. They used the in-house
design firm of Homeplans, part of Move, which
"provided a ton of design guidance, and modified the
plan to meet all local codes."
The Emersons moved into their new home 16 months after they
first broke ground. They quickly found themselves spending
90 percent of their time at home in the kitchen and family
room, but they also name the master bath and its closet as
favorite features.
For this family, the future has already begun. They recently
welcomed their first child into the world and plan to
continue decorating the interior, as budget allows.
Would they use a pre-drawn home plan again? "Absolutely,"
says Wayne. "[A stock blueprint] gives you an incredible
'base' upon which to build, and a visual idea of what you are
going to see as the outcome."
We couldn't agree more!
