  • We all want to be unique. Whether it's the way we dress, the car we drive or—the home we build! That's why building a stock home plan is ideal. Just take a look at one of the many magazines from Homeplans and you'll find over 200 unique plans. Or you can order a CD-ROM with even more plans to choose from, which is exactly what one of our customers did.

Richard Brooks, of Wiggins, Miss., along with his wife, Carolyn, chose Plan E-1710 because it was "different than anything we have in the area." In their development in Wiggins, a small town located about halfway between Hattiesburg and Biloxi, most of the homes you'll see are of a more traditional style with Southern and country inspiration. The Spanish- and Mediterranean-style influences of Plan E-1710 really stick out. The creamy stucco facade is highlighted by white trim and a soaring hip roof. Arched windows with keystone accents dress up the exterior even more. Richard, a retired builder, pointed out his own favorite features of the exterior, stating, "I love the arches and steep roof." The true beauty of the home, however, lies in its open and spacious floor plan.

Upon entering the home, you'll be welcomed by the cavernous living room, where a cozy fireplace warms up the space. A gorgeous wall of windows brings light into this room, as well as the adjoining dining room, while French doors lead to a patio with a pool. The efficient kitchen serves not only the dining room, but the sunny eating nook and snack bar as well. Bedrooms flank the main living areas, with the master suite on one side and two secondary bedrooms on the other.

As if the master suite wasn't luxurious enough already, the Brookses chose to add even more space to the private bath. They did this by modifying the garage to create space for three cars instead of two and eliminating the storage area, thus making the walk-in closet and the bath larger.

Other modifications included moving the living room's fireplace to allow for more windows overlooking the rear patio, where they added a sparkling pool. They also dressed the home up with "a tremendous amount of moldings."

Making modifications to the home is one of the reasons Richard recommends using stock home plans. After choosing the plan, "I can modify it to the way I want it," he says.

And as the Brookses found out, the result can be as unique as they dare.
