  • Good things come to those who wait. As cliché as it sounds, this statement held true for Tom and Beth Wolfe, of Silverdale, Washington. Seven—yes, seven—years after hanging Plan GA-9601 on their refrigerator door, the Wolfes began building their dream home.

Tom Wolfe, captain of the police department in nearby Bremerton, and his wife Beth, a certified athletic trainer and occupational consultant, were drawn to this plan because of its beautiful Arts and Crafts architecture, and hung the plan on the fridge, saying, "Someday, we're going to build this house." And they were right. Years after first seeing the plan and looking through countless more home-plan magazines—just to be sure—Tom and Beth decided that Plan GA-9601 was still their favorite, and they began construction.

Though they were enamored with the plan, the Wolfes had some changes in mind for their new home. After purchasing the reproducible blueprints, they made several modifications to the original design. Some of these modifications include shaping the living room entries into enlarged arches and turning the dining room into a study.

Another modification created one of their favorite features of the home. They decided to take out the tub from the master bath and instead installed an 8-ft.-wide double-headed shower. Exterior modifications include changes to the garage and windows. And since their land was not wide enough to have the original, side-entry garage, they made a front-entry layout instead.

Despite modifications, the Wolfes still stayed true to the home design they originally fell in love with. When asked if they would use stock plans again, the Wolfes replied, "Yes! They are great plans—affordable, and easy to upgrade or keep simple, whatever your budget dictates."

The Wolfes plan on living in this home for a long time to come. And why wouldn't they? Their home is proof positive that patience pays off!
