  • Who hasn't dreamed of nestling in front of a warm fire inside a beautiful home set on a scenic hill? For Tom and Kay Cypher of Saxton, Penn., such a treasure was found in Plan GA-9601.

Moving to a new location prompted this couple to consider what was to become their first building project. A retired professor of education, Tom suggested that comfort and ease be the criteria for their new home. Plan GA-9601 met this criteria with its open area in the center of the home and a layout in which all necessary living spaces were concentrated on the main floor—a smart arrangement in anticipation of the Cyphers' "golden years."

Despite the existing beauty of their chosen floor plan, the Cyphers decided to modify parts of the home to make it just right for their needs. First, they enclosed the living room, joining it to the master bedroom as a spacious sitting area. This created a comfortable and expansive suite that they can enjoy for many more years. To further buffer the master suite from unwanted noise, they enlarged and then shifted the upper-floor bath to the opposite side of the home, while still maintaining its proximity to the secondary bedrooms. Finally, the Cyphers finished off the future area and the attic, extending the balcony overlook and creating an incredible loft area that peers into the astounding Great Room below.

Without question, the fireplace in the Great Room is the glorious hallmark of the entire home. Reveling in rustic stone surrounds, the fireplace anchors the main-floor living spaces and even draws attention from above. No wonder it has become a favorite feature for the Cyphers!

After a year of building, the Cyphers completed their home, with construction costs reaching upwards of $200,000. With future aspirations of simply living in and enjoying their new home, it is clear that this satisfied couple has found the haven of their dreams.
