With a trio of eye-catching dormers and a sprawling wraparound porch, this home politely offers a smile and a "welcome home" to its owners every day. And fittingly, a home with this much charm and warmth is comfortably nestled in Nashville, Tenn., a city that is no stranger to friendly hospitality.
When Jim and Jenny Wilson began their quest for a new home, they knew exactly what they wanted: a main-floor master suite and plenty of room for when their four children and nine grandchildren visited. Jenny notes, "It's just the two of us most of the time, so we live on the main floor. But sometimes my family comes to stay and the grandchildren like to spend the night, so the extra rooms [upstairs] are nice." The Wilsons also knew they wanted to build, rather than buy. Jim remembered a design he had seen ten years ago, Plan L-88-VB. "The wraparound porch is what first attracted us to it," explains Jenny. Touching all four sides of the house, the porch is the perfect venue for enjoying the mild Tennessee weather. And the pool they added in the backyard keeps the grandkids happy.
Inside, a handsome fireplace graces the spacious living room. The Wilsons expanded the home's width by eight feet—four feet on either side of the home—to help accommodate an island in the kitchen and even more space in the living room. They also modified the master suite and made it bigger—much bigger. "Whenever people come in my house they always comment on the master suite," Jenny says, adding, "My sister-in-law walked in and said 'That's bigger than my first apartment!'" The Wilsons enlarged the bedroom by extending the rear walls as far back as the master bath's rear walls. Then they added French doors on the right side of the room, opening to the rear veranda.
The Wilsons again added their own personal touch to the upper floor by adding a window seat to the sitting area overlooking the backyard and beyond. Two large secondary bedrooms and a full bath are perfect for when they have company.
In the original Music City, the Wilsons' stunning new home is quickly becoming as popular as rhythm and blues. Jenny exclaims, "We have people stop and turn down our street when they see our house. Our house stops people!"
So would the Wilsons ever consider building another home? "This is the last house we'll build," they promise. We can't blame them.
