What happens when a style-savvy couple insists on combining their distinctive tastes in homes to find a plan that satisfies them both? They build a unique home boasting both modern amenities and the timeless elements of historic architectural styles.

Finding a home that fits the needs and wants of both partners, while staying within the allotted budget and looking good, too, is a seemingly impossible task, though it's one familiar to many couples. But the St. Laurents were up for the challenge, and their stunning result was one of success: a beautiful home that satisfied them both.

The St. Laurents began the task by searching through hundreds of home plans until they came across Plan DRU-2884, a nostalgic home with country farmhouse elements. Also known as Pavilion Place, this classic beauty features four spacious bedrooms, two fireplaces, and an open layout. Astonishingly, the design includes everything the St. Laurents were looking for, from historic qualities to bright and open spaces.

The home's tempting exterior shows off the charming characteristics of an updated farmhouse. By combining handsome gables, cute shuttered windows and sleek horizontal siding, a modern version of a classic favorite is achieved. Lovely window arrangements, which vary in size and style, offer yet another highlight, adding flair to the exterior as they flood the interior with natural light.

Perhaps the most attractive part of the facade is the wraparound porch, which boasts an extra twist: it is interrupted by the family room, so that it actually optimizes the interior layout by engaging the family room with the outdoors as it wraps around either side of the room. This clever exterior design allows the porch to offer two distinct atmospheres. From the front, views of verdant acreage and a pond surrounded by colorful perennials provide a serene environment for relaxing with a book or chatting with a friend. From the back, extra privacy is provided, giving the family an opportunity to spend time together outdoors.

Thoughtful touches like that of the separated porch are found throughout the home's interior, as well, beginning with the foyer. A cozy vestibule with a roomy coat closet, the foyer welcomes the St. Laurents home at the end of a day and offers guests a place to stow their wraps. The secluded foyer opens to an airy interior with high ceilings. A smart layout connects the rooms of the main floor, from the formal living room, which showcases a handsome, focal-point fireplace, to the open kitchen and dining room. Located through pocket doors from the dining room, the family room is far enough away from the busy kitchen to create a perfect environment for relaxing.

The casual kitchen, on the other hand, serves as a hub of activity, and the family wouldn't have it any other way. A center island and plenty of prep counters help the St. Laurents meet the demands of their busy lifestyle, while the nearby utility room, which is stocked full of cabinets with lots of storage space, organizes the daily chores and food storage. A tidy powder room occupies another corner and is easily accessible from the shared rooms.

When the occasion calls for a refined feast, the dining room responds beautifully. It segues smoothly from the kitchen and opens into the informal family room. The dining room is conveniently served by a snack bar extending from the kitchen, and offers sliding-door access to the back porch, making outdoor dining a must on nice evenings. Regardless of the weather, however, unbeatable views of the backyard are present at every meal.

Spacious enough for a large party, and cozy enough for two, the family room is another draw. Full windows and a door opening to the front porch frame the room, providing spectacular views from every angle. The handy pocket doors give the room the flexibility to be closed off for privacy, or left open for a more casual atmosphere.

Upstairs, the St. Laurents continue to enjoy contemporary luxury and comfort. The master suite overlooks a pond from large windows. It also features a cozy fireplace, a deep walk-in closet and a plush private bath with an oval tub and a separate shower. A second bedroom is so spacious that guests can easily get spoiled. For the St. Laurents' two daughters, there's more of the same comfort. Two nice-sized bedrooms, each boasting an ample closet, share a roomy full bath.

Blending traditional style with up-to-date amenities, the home turned out to be the St. Laurents' dream.
