Saltbox The easily recognizable saltbox style can still be found in New England, where it developed during the late 17th century. Saltbox homes have a second story that can only be viewed from the front of the home. The structure’s line then slopes down sharply toward the back of the home. The homes have smaller windows, shingle siding, symmetrical facades and usually large chimneys, either centered or on one of the sides.
